After 30mins, over 300 stairs and some of the steepest inclines i've ever experienced we made it, exhausted! NEVER AGAIN. They told me and my preganant wife that it was only a short walk with our suitcases up some stairs to the road. Finally if the staff reccomend that the main road (for bus connections to Split) is in walking distance. The first person to open an individual and unique restaurant in Brela will fill it daily and make an absolute mint. The choice was quite large but alas everything was either fried or grilled to death, sauces were out of a can and salads can all be found in the book “Great Salads of the 1980’s. We had had enough of pizza, spaghetti bolognase/carbonara, fried fresh fish, fried squid, grilled turkey/chicken or steak. We stayed in Brela for 6 nights and by evening number six we were so bored of the food that it became almost comical. (Maximum 10 at most in Brela) It seems like they had a meeting at the beginning of the season to agree a standard menu that each restaurant would serve as they all served exactly the same things. My only gripe was not with the hotel but with the lack of imagination of the local restaurants. But again I can’t really complain for the price. Breakfast was a no-frills affair and didn’t really live up to expectations, lots of bread, bizarre looking cereals, fried eggs, boiled eggs, omelet’s, more fried eggs and a variety of sweaty cheese and ham. Our sea view (2nd floor) was fantastic with lovely sunsets every evening.

I wholeheartedly recommend a sea view as the back side of the hotel gets no sun at all and the terraces are rather dark. The rooms were nicely sized with plenty of storage and reasonable air conditioning. The common areas pool, restaurant, bar, reception etc… were clean, spacious and cool. Just as long as you remember that they can at times seem a little short but that is just a difference in languages. All in all I cannot fault the hotel the service was good with pleasant, helpful staff. A good touch up is needed but I guess before that can begin, confidence among the European masses needs to be restored. Maestral is beginning to become a little shabby and this shows in no place more so than the rooms.
Hotel maestral croatia full#
I can imagine the huge cavernous restaurant and outside bar/entertainment areas full to the brim with tourists from all over Europe whereas now it seemed like only German pensioners were present. The hotel is fairly big and spacious and again this is a sign of how things used to be. Two decades and several political upheavals later and you are left with modern day Brela and modern day Hotel Maestral. Walking into the hotel is like walking through a door into the 1980’s and every detail from design to background music harks back to the days when Yugoslavia was one of the top 5 package destinations in Europe. The bluesun hotel chain has 3 hotels virtually on top of each other in Brela and Maestral is obviously one of the earlier ones.

We travelled here at the very end of the season (September) and therefore some parts of this review may be different for those travelling mid season.
